Making a third impression
An agreement can refer to a wet stone, a salted skin, a forest or a fire without literally containing the object mentioned. The perfumer selects the complementary facets and regulates their proportions.
Balance and intention
A good deal has an identifiable intention. One material can give the attack, the other the volume, the third the depth. Every one can disbalance the whole.
Exercise of observation
Choose two familiar smells. First describe each separately, and then imagine what their approach could tell. The question is not only “is it pleasant?” but “which new image appears?”
